The final call for the not-so-iconic phone box

Where once they stood proud, an institution instantly recognised and associated with the British landscape and viewed fondly abroad, the red telephone box is no more.

Today, what stands in its place possesses little character or presence and they are becoming increasingly insignificant given that the average Brit now possesses 3 mobile phones. The days of the public phone boxes are well and truly gone.

Only today, on my way to work, I noticed at least 3 boxes which have had their glass smashed or vandalised in some other way. They happen at such regularity that I have had some removed by BT in the past. Given their low level of use and the frequency of vandalism and attacks, I am surprised that BT have not taken steps to remove many more of these lifeless boxes from our towns and cities. It’s time they disappeared for good.

You'd better not say that red telephone boxes should be dispensed in Abthorpe Yousuf as we still have one box on our village green. It's much loved but hardly used and can only be accessed using a credit or debit card. Perhaps we should re-nationalise the telephone system and reinstate these wonderful boxes throughout the country? Something for the Tory manifesto!

Yousuf we have the same problem in Shrewsbury. They are vandalised all the time and someimes BT takes ages to fix them. You are right, we can do away with them, I dont think too many people will miss them.

Good seeing you again.
