It must have been an extremely difficult time for David Cameron but the swift actions and the appointment of Dominic into this extremely high profile role is particularly welcomed by me and no doubt by many within the party and beyond.
I have known Dominic for a number of years. He is one of the most able Members of Parliament. A principled man, a likeable chap with a safe pair of hands, Dominic is precisely the type of person needed in this very important role. He will approach key issues like the 42 day detention, ID cards, CCTV and the daily erosion of civil liberties as mentioned by David Davis, in calm and measured way.
Dominic has immense experience and an insight into how many different communities work, a key aspect of being an MP which sadly so many of them lack. He is perfectly placed to understand and appreciate the challenges we face and the best way to deal with them.
A future Conservative Government needs a different approach to dealing with terrorism. The fundamental change from the current Government would be not to alienate hardworking, decent Muslims with draconian measures sure to drive the most loyal of citizens to resent the system.
