Even for the LibDems, leader Nick Clegg talking about his conquests in bed was taking things a bit too liberally.
Against the backdrop of a culture of promiscuity, drug taking, binge-drinking, celebrity obsessed generation; Clegg’s admissions will further damage politicians standing amongst the ordinary people. Just like the shameful way in which non-entity celebs boast of their unsavory ways and flaunt their private parts for publicity, politicians wanting to be “of the people” are taking things all too literally. Clegg’s chums in recent months have embarrassed themselves with rent-boys, cheeky girls and this latest chapter will do little to change the sleazy, hypocritical and self-important image politicians are fast acquiring.
Sex and drugs are two of the biggest concerns for the population today. Literally hundreds of thousands are picking up sexually transmitted diseases daily from their casual attitude towards it and drugs are causing pain and misery for millions. So you would think that politicians would think twice about any comments they make to boast about their past as if its something to be proud of.
Clegg was clearly aiming his comments to the lads mag generation. A woman politician making similar claims of 30 partners before she hit thirty would be called a whole host of unsavory names. Politicians like Clegg have a duty and responsibility to set an example. It isn’t hip or cool to ape a generation for whom sexual conquests and life in the fast lane is becoming the norm and who take little care to think of the consequences and the responsibilities that come with their age and actions. Clegg should be setting an example to young people and highlighting the dangers of such irresponsible behaviour. Instead he is pandering to depths that are despised by the very people who engage in them.
Imagine the shame of those associated with this man today. His wife, children and family have to respect him first and foremost as a man and then a politician. What chance of people like Clegg being taken seriously when they peddle such immoral attitudes in a society that is already suffering from world-wide condemnation of its sexual promiscuity, binge-drinking and celebrity drugs culture. Politician’s messages will fall on deaf years of the young on such matters.
There is something very undignified about a party leader talking about a very private matter like sex. Clegg and his chums have the nerve to talk about respect and equality when their very actions smack of hypocrisy and sends yet another section of the population –women- to into believing that when it comes down to it, they are still seen as nothing more than sex objects, used and abused and then talked of as nothing more than a number.
I hope that women do not forget this come the next election and remind him that he will fall short by thirty come the count.
